Building Leonard and The She-Deck Show

The last few weeks between teaching and everything else, I've been busy with "Leonard"...

"Leonard" is a giant lizard sculpture for my upcoming solo show called "Books of Whimsy" (You know that thing I mention all the time and have been working on all year). Anyway here he is in progress. I used a pool noodle to create the right curve to his body.

I hand painted designs on this 6 dollar table I picked up at good will, mounted a book on it and like all my sculptures tried to create the illusion that Leonard was emerging from the book.

Anyway this is Leonard getting his base coat outside on the patio.

And here he is finished.  All pretty and ready for his big day!

Anyway Leonard is done and I'm on to the next one!

Last Friday was also the opening night of the "She-Deck" show sponsored by {9}Gallery downtown.
This is Chloe that night posing with her skate deck (just above her head).

And me with my "Alice in Wonderland" themed skate deck.

It was an impressive show, with some really talented local artists. These two are some of my favorites!

It's good to have a nice outing on a sweltering summer evening!

In other news my new big complied book of "The Horribles" is now available!!!

Anyway this week Chloe is away again at "Aviation" camp.  I signed a paper that said I was ok with her flying a plane (this kid has not even gotten her driver's license!) Anyway, if you see me walking around muttering and staring up at the skies, you now know why!

Survivng June in Phoenix

The title of this post sounds miserable, but actually June so far has stayed in the "pleasantly warm" range (meaning less than 100ºF on many days). We've even had rain. RAIN!!  On Monday when I was out to breakfast with Mike I overheard the waitress as she seated other customers...
"I heard it might rain today!"
"OH NO! I hate the rain."
"Really? Well, I'll be back for your order."
(When she said "Really?" -that meant, "Oh you're not from Arizona.")

Much of the last couple of weeks I've been running art camps for kids.  One day when it began to pour all the children screamed and began to dance in front of the big picture windows.  It was pretty hilarious. However like most things though the cooler weather(if you can call 98ºF that) is coming to an end and for next week it'll be up to 112ºF.

On Monday I heard the fabulous news that my skate deck that I'd designed and painted was selected to be in the "She -Deck" show at {9} The Gallery downtown.

I was a little nervous as I'd never painted anything like a skate deck for a skateboard before.

Because it's an object, I went ahead and painted both sides.

The theme of the show is skate decks designed and painted by women and girls, so Chloe also decided to try her hand at it.

I was thrilled to learn her deck was also accepted!  The show will open on June 19th at 6pm.  Come on down if you're in the area (there will be free food and (probably) free booze!).

In other news Chloe took her S.A.T. last weekend, which she declared was super easy!  (sounds good, right?) and is getting packed for her trip to Las Vegas this weekend with her youth group. Phoebe's got us running her to theater camp at Valley Youth Theatre these days. They're putting on a big production of "Honk" at the end of the month. Naomi is working her way through a huge number of books that she has loaded onto her nook, given to her by my brother during her big trip to Washington.

Last week Mike and I celebrated 21 years of marriage with an evening of Ethiopian food and "Mad Max" (the new one) in 3D. The food was great and the movie was ridiculous!  Have an excellent week. :)

Kids on the Move

Last week was a flurry of travel for my kids who had just wrapped up their school years. It began on Tuesday at 4am, when we dropped a very excited Phoebe off at the airport for her big school trip to Washington DC...

Then she was off first to Virginia and then on to the capitol.

Phoebe by the Lincoln Memorial.

She had a fabulous time traveling with her friends. She also was thrilled to be visiting places that she spent the year learning about in her Social Studies class.

And here she is by the reflecting pool. The day after Phoebe flew east, we were at the airport again.  This time for Naomi, who was off to visit her Aunt Kristin and Uncle Duncan up in Washington State. Here she is waiting to board at Phoenix airport...

She had a good flight (all on her own!) and met them in Seattle.

Naomi on Whidbey Island with their dog Casey on the beach.

In a climbing gym in Seattle.

Naomi, Duncan and Kristin on top of the space needle.  She came home today more than a little sad that her big trip was over!

Chloe also took a trip last week with the Girl Scouts to tour through L.A. Here she is at the LaBrea Tar Pits.

And walking through the museum.

At one of the exhibits.

Dino Bones!

She also toured the prop house for Waner Bros Studio. She tried on the sorting hat from Harry Potter.  As soon as it touched her head it shouted "Another Weasley!!" and placed her in Gryffindor.

On the Warner Bros Studio tour she saw the Ellen set.

As well as the set for "Pretty Little Liars"!!

She was home on Sunday night and clearly had a blast!  In the meantime Mike and I wound up alone for almost two whole days!! We also had a nice time. ;)
