Wishing Grapes for the New Year!
On New Years Eve in the morning I went down to the market and saw a huge display of grapes on sale. They looked amazing, so of course I bought some. When I got home, Naomi (my youngest) found them and immediately asked if they were for the Colombian New Years Eve tradition.
"What tradition?"
"You eat 12 grapes at midnight, one for each month and make wishes for the New Year. I think you have to go under a table."
"Ummmm... No, but we could do that I guess. Not sure I want to crawl under a table though, unless there's an earthquake."
Then we looked it up and it turns out it's a Spanish tradition that is practiced across Latin America and no tables are required! So we each took a bowl of grapes with us when we left for the beach at quarter to midnight. Then we sat on the barrier wall making wishes and eating grapes while fireworks exploded all around us and throughout the city! BTW I was right-Those grapes were amazing.
